Woman Loses Her Legs Due To Common Household Product, Now She’s Warning Women Everywhere
Model Lauren Wasser’s Battle with Toxic Shock Syndrome. 35-year-old model Lauren Wasser nearly died from Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but life-threatening condition caused by a tampon. At age 24, she developed flu-like symptoms that escalated into a heart attack, organ failure, and gangrene, ultimately leading to the amputation of both legs.
Her life was saved thanks to a wellness check by her mother, but the trauma was life-changing. She spent months in a wheelchair and battled depression. Although her left leg was initially saved, she later chose to amputate it due to ongoing pain.
Wasser now raises awareness about the hidden dangers of feminine hygiene products. She advocates for transparency in tampon ingredients, warning about harmful substances like dioxin and synthetic fibers.

She works alongside families affected by TSS and with lawmakers like Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney to push for legislation requiring companies to list all ingredients on menstrual product packaging.

Despite her challenges, Wasser has become a successful model, known as “fashion’s Girl with the Golden Legs.” Her story is a powerful reminder of the need for awareness, safer products, and clear labeling to protect women’s health.
