Assaults on ICE Agents Rise Sharply; Federal Charges Follow. Federal immigration agents are facing a sharp rise in violent assaults, prompting strong legal action. Recent arrests signal the government’s growing pushback. Gregory K. Bovino, Chief of the El Centro Border Patrol Sector, shared a video of a U.S. citizen being arrested in Los Angeles for spitting on federal agents during a deportation operation.

The suspect, wearing an anti-ICE shirt, was arrested by the BORTAC special ops unit. Bovino stated, “If you assault a federal agent, you earn federal consequences.”bIn Oregon, 24-year-old Robert Jacob Hoopes was arrested for allegedly throwing rocks and injuring an ICE officer during a June protest in Portland.

He also reportedly helped damage the building with a makeshift battering ram. Hoopes now faces felony charges including aggravated assault on a federal officer and damaging federal property.bSince June 13, 2025, 23 individuals have been charged in Oregon alone for crimes at ICE facilities, including arson and assault.

In another case, two California clinic workers, Jose de Jesus Ortega and Danielle Nadine Davila, were arrested on July 25 for allegedly assaulting an ICE agent and conspiring to interfere with federal duties.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, assaults on ICE officers have increased by 830% between January 21 and July 14, 2025, compared to the same time period in 2024.
